Light, Medium, or Dark Roast?

Have you ever gone to the grocery store to buy coffee but felt intimidated by all the different types of coffee there are? There are bags of coffee that will say light roast, medium roast, and dark roast. Do you choose pre-ground coffee or whole bean? If you have asked around, most people will tell you what they believe to be the best type of roast. Of course, I have a favorite as well but it’s a personal preference. Today I will help you decide what type of roast would be best for you.

Light Roasts

Light roasts allow you to taste more of the coffee beans notes (flavors) and not so much taste as much from the roasting process. The coffee will taste different depending on what region your coffee comes from. The reason for that is because the soil and surrounding vegetation affect the taste.

Medium and Dark Roasts

Medium roasts and dark roasts are most popular here in the US. Medium roasts still hold many of the original notes but there’s also that extra taste you get from the roasting process. Dark roasts take away most of the coffee notes and have a darker, bolder taste from being roasted a lot longer than the medium or light roasts. I do personally enjoy a medium roast or light roast compared to a dark roast but that’s only my preference. My advice to you is to try each of them and see for yourself how you like it!

Note: The caffeine content is relatively the same for each type of roast. It is true that certain values are lost when the coffee bean is roasted but the change in caffeine content is so small that there’s ultimately no difference; so feel free to choose whichever roast tastes best for you.

I think light roast sounds the most appealing to me. I’m not sure if I have ever had light roast coffee. As you said, medium to dark is very popular here in the United States. I’m sure that’s all I’ve tasted before. I’m definitely excited to try a light roast!
